Student loan counseling
Your school can meet the Department of Education student loan counseling requirements online.
The student loan Entrance and Exit counseling programs include information about:
- the financial aid process,
- budget management,
- borrower rights and responsibilities, and
- the Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFELP).
This is a free service from Sallie Mae.
Student borrowers access these interactive programs through your school's website They receive required counseling information and can email questions directly to your financial aid office. You can customize the quiz that appears at the end of the counseling sessions to best meet your school's needs.
Student quiz results are immediately emailed to your financial aid office. Your school can choose to receive individual or cumulative results. Links are provided to our education loan calculators, a financial aid FAQ, and the homepages of our company and your school.
How it works
- Your school selects its options, customizes the quiz (if required), and gets information for creating a Web link by completing the setup process for student loan Entrance or Exit counseling.
- You instruct students to access your school's website and select the student loan counseling link (an icon that we provide).
- Students visit our website.
- Students work through the counseling screens.
- Students complete the online quiz, if required.
- After each student completes the counseling, the system sends a confirmation message to your school with the student's name, Social Security number, and the number of quiz questions answered correctly on the first try (if required).
- Students who fail the quiz can go back to the start of the counseling session.
Whether or not students pass the quiz, they can go to our education loan calculators, financial aid FAQs, and the homepages of our company and your school.
School options
Your school can introduce the counseling programs through your website. You decide the location and type of link on your site and how to blend your school's graphics with ours. Your school also has counseling program options:
- You choose the standard or enhanced version of Entrance counseling.
- You choose whether to require that students take a quiz.
- You have a choice of 50 questions and how many questions each borrower must answer correctly.
- You provide an email address of the financial aid office for student questions.
- You provide an email address for confirmation messages after borrowers complete their counseling.
Your financial aid staff does not have to schedule these sessions or work around schedule conflicts.
